I am an artist/performer working across moving image, digital and new media, and working predominantly with my body to communicate ideas of perfection, social media, disability through the lens of a middle aged woman. I am interested in taking part in your project as it highlights the intersection between the two relevant mediums of my practice.
haunting image... I wonder, since you mentioned disability, is the liminal space between ability/ -dis-ability the seemingly peeling layers, almost dissolving of 'self', that I see in this piece?
ReplyDeleteIt is mostly about new ways of defining the self, as well as what "moves" the surface. The idea of a static image mimics the less functional body, and through using digital technologies I am able to create a form of movement beneath the surface. In a way I think you hit the nail on the head there, it is this liminal space that makes the image uncanny.
DeleteThe movement of the surface seems to be revealing something powerful and fundamental. Do you see self-containment being held in this image?
ReplyDeleteYes, of course. I think it was not made with the intention of making it as such, but creating the layers eventually led to this self-containment feeling you identified.
DeleteThe idea of having different movements combined is the heart of my work, this allows me to explore the processes of changing-aging and self reflecting in a therapeutic, almost hypnotic way.
I am interested by the contrasting, almost contradictory, observations above: that of the self dissolving in the liminal space, and that of self containment. Perhaps both these can be present in one work?
ReplyDeleteI think they have to so exist in this particular work, and this is why it works so well in a layered image. Perhaps it is so obvious to me, as this image is only one frame from a video work and I cannot really consider it as one image in itself.
